Description: This workshop will highlight the ACA codes of ethics that are relevant to providing counseling in a rural area and present an ethical decision making model. Utilizing small group discussion, participants will develop strategies to address the ACA code of ethics application to case presentation/scenarios. Risk management strategies for professional counselors by Burt Bertram and Nancy Wheeler DVD (published by ACA Trust Inc.) will be utilized in short segments. Examples of issues addressed are: potential dual relationships - counseling someone who you may see often and bartering vs. cash payments. The goal of this workshop is for attendees to examine the ACA ethical codes relevant to providing counseling in a rural area. The objectives of the course are: 1) Participants will review and examine the ACA code of ethics that are relevant to providing counseling in a rural area; 2) Participants will apply an ethical decision making model and ACA code of ethics to case scenarios; and 3) Participants will receive instruction on risk management of ACA approved materials relevant to providing counseling in a rural area.

About the Presenter: Christina Rosen Galvin, Ed.D., LPC, NBCC, LCAS, ICRC, is an Assistant Professor at Appalachian State University. Her experience includes 20 years as a licensed clinical counselor, 10 years as a supervisor, 6 years as a counselor educator and 4 years as an instructor. Her counseling specialties involve the following: chemical dependency, co-dependency, dual diagnosis, integrating spirituality into counseling and multi-cultural counseling. Her counseling modalities embrace: prevention, individual, EAP, group work, family/couple, and working with involuntary clients. Ms. Galvin’s presentations, publications, and research interests comprise: (a) group work, (b) dual diagnosis, (c) relapse prevention, (d) chemical dependency, (e) ethics in supervision, (f) the supervisor and supervisee’s relationship, and (g) counselor training. She has four publications, three manuscripts submitted, and is involved in 7 research projects. She has presented 35 professional presentations in locations and associations including Beijing, China; ACA, ACES, SACES, RMACE, NCACES, and ASGW. State conferences include: Ohio, Idaho, and North Carolina. In addition, Ms. Galvin is locally involved in community presentations and workshops.
